Albright-Knox Art Gallery
1. The artworks that made an impact or impresson on me are:
- A. La jeune bonne (The Servant Girl), ca. 1918 (slide 4)
Amedeo Modigliani
Oil and canvas
I just felt so sad when I saw this painting. The girl looked so sad and had like a blank stare in her eyes. To me it felt like she knew her life was going to be nothing more than a servant girl and that she would never know the true meaning of happiness. It's like how I feel about my job being a nursing assistant and that I will never be anything more.
- B. Carcass of Beef, ca. 1925 (slide 3)
Chaim Soutine
Oil and canvas
This painting was quite different. I never saw a painting of a carcass before. It made me rethink about eating red meat. I felt sad for animals.
- C. The Wedding, ca. 1892 (slide 2)
Gari Melchers
Oil and canvas
This painting wasn't a traditional wedding. To me this was making the statement that your wedding can be anything you want it to be and you can wear anything you want to wear.
2. The artworks that I felt a connection to are:
- A. Femme et oiseaux dans la nuit (Woman and Birds in the Night),
1945 (slide 6)
Joan Miro
Oil and canvas
I felt a connection to this painting because my whole life my nickname was birdy because I could whistle, even my husband calls me birdy. I just felt connected like that painting represented me.
- B. Invisible Object (Hands Holding the Void), 1934 (slide10)
Alberto Giacometti
Bronze
I really felt a connection to this statue. To me this represented all the miscarriages that I have had. Like I was standing there holding nothing (holding the void) and it should have been a baby. This one hit me hard.
- C. Baby Girl, 1963 (slide 8)
Marisol
Wood and mix media
I felt a connection to this wooden statue because it is this big baby and there is this little person on it's lap and it reminded me of my son and I. That he likes to think he is bigger than me and make his own rules.
3. The artworks that I would like to know more about are:
- A. L' Etoile, 1956 (slide 7)
Jean Arp
Bronze, Edition 2/3
I just thought this sculpture was really neat. I would like to know the history behind it and what idea triggered this creation.
-B. 100 Cans, 1962 (slide 5)
Andy Warhol
Oil and canvas
I look at this painting and I guess I just don't understand it. It is 100 cans of campbell's soup beef noodle. I want to know why it was created.
-C. Nana, ca. 1965 (slide 9)
Niki de Saint Phalle
Mix Media.
I just really want to know the meaning of this piece of artwork. It is neat looking.
Here are the slides of my trip to the art gallery:)

Logo
1. I liked creating my logo. I thought it was really a lot of fun.
2. When I was thinking of ideas I just kept coming back to I really wanted this logo to represent my life and everything that has happened, all my milestones. So I did a big circle of life and put symbols that represented me as a baby, child, adult, my first apartment, my job as a nursing assistant, wife, mother, son, my education, my drive to want to be a social worker, my first house, and a symbol to represent my strength.
3. The important discovery I made when making my logo was the emotions I had while doing it. This really made you think about yourself and what you stand for.
4. I learned a lot from the book and the videos. From the video's I learned that you want to express yourself but not to offend anyone and from the book I learned what colors to use, how to show motion, and what symbols mean to a piece of art work.
My Logo Enjoy:)

Pictures
Well I am no photographer that is for sure:) For these pictures I just tried to think what I could do, what I could create, or what I could snap a picture of that best fit the elements and principles of design. Also I chose the pictures on how I looked at them, reacted to them, and how I felt toward them. Here is my slide show HOPE YOU ALL ENJOY IT:) http://s1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/JoannaLimpert/?albumview=slideshow |

Color
1. Color is probably the one visual element that gives us the most pleasure. Many people have a favorite color that they are drawn to. Various studies have demonstrated that color affects a wide range of psychological and physiological responses.
Color affects us on such a basic level that few would argue that we have a direct emotional response to it. Different colors trigger different responses for everyone. A good example is the colors green and red because they tend to remind people of Christmas. Now if you have had nothing but bad experiences with Christmas you are going to be upset or moody when you see those colors and now if you have had nothing but good experiences with Christmas when you see those colors you are going to feel happy and excited. Also it has been said that colors can trigger a response so bad that people could go create a crime just on seeing a certain color. Not everyone is going to have the same feelings about every color and not everyone is going to respond the same when they see color.
2. The theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fasinates me is that color can control how a person acts. Red is suppose to increase appetite, blue significantly lower a persons blood pressure, pulse, and respiration, and pink can calm children down. It is just wild to think that color affects how we act and feel.
3. Looking at this video I like Monet's paintings. He believed to just see color not objects. With him just seeing color you were able to still make out what he was painting but it wasn't just a pond or bushes it seemed to be so much more. It's hard to emplain. He thought of himself as a color scientist. His paintings were amazing. The colors blended so well together and really made u feel like you were in a pond and it just gave you a feeling of calmness.
4. Looking at this video and knowning about color I can definitly see how colors makes you have an emotional reaction. Like with the stain glass windows in the hospice with those bright colors. You can really feel like you are actually in the last judgement and sadness comes over you when u see the rich go to heavan and the poor has to prove themselves. Also with Goya's painting his monstrous paintings/black period he used dark colors and you really felt them like the man eating his child, that was really powerful, scary, and upsetting.

Art Videos
Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts
1. From this video I learned that all artist's have there own philosophies on the same subjects and see the same subjects in different ways from there creative eyes.
2. I think Friedrich Von Schiller's theory on aesthetics is pretty important because he talkes about what makes us humans, our freedom, and our morals. He states "art makes us more human." He also goes on to say art is necessary for social order based on freedom instead of totalitarianism restraints. Then he ends with a very wonderful quote "when we develop our aesthetic capacities, we develop our moral capacities, so much so that aesthetic education renders moral education superfluous."
CARTA: Neurobiology Neurology and Art and Aesthetics
1. From this video I learned that the brain is an important part of aesthetics. Each part of the brain helps us see and react to different things.
3. Changeux-I liked his view on aesthetics and art but somethings I disagree with. Like when he said works of art are human productions, art happens all around us not just human made. I liked that he said art was a form of communication and that it is a constant evolution.
Most interesting fact that I discovered from this speaker was that in an artisit brain anything is possible.
Ramachandran - I liked his view on aesthetics. He explained that there such things as artistic universals and the brain responds to art in several ways. The way the brain responds is very well represented in his 8 laws of aesthetics. I liked the laws of aesthetics and they made a lot of sense.
Most interesting fact that I discovered from this speaker was that it takes the brain 15 years to develop.
4. The videos relate to the readings in the book because the book talks about aesthetics but kind of in a general way and the videos give us more details, examples, and other prespectives to think about. I learn more if I read and then look at other examples or different perpectives on the same subject.
5. I liked the films but I did feel they were a bit long. It was also hard to understand Changeux, his accent was strong. I feel they help me gain a better understanding of aesthetics because they gave more details, examples, and other prespectives. They helped me understand art a bit more. I like to hear all the artisit's philosopies. I felt they all had something different to offer.
